I am sooo loving my Dormeyer 1950’s-ish mixer. I passed one up years ago and regretted it ever since. After Christmas I came across this one at Gene’s Antique Mall (Wimberley, TX of course) and didn’t buy. What the ???? I couldn’t sleep so I went back and it was gone! I was pulling a “dad from the Christmas Story” temper tantrum (but keeping most of it internal) and the lady working the front said “Oh, we still have it. Hold on.” I had to play it cool. You know Danny style (Grease): “That’s cool baby, you know how it is, rockin’ and rollin‘ and what not.” I say “So what’s the lowest you’ll take?” Her answer “25 Bones!” What the??? Hmmm, let me think about it. NOT! This little puppy has been used on a regular bases. I love, love my Kitchen Aid but it can be a bit of a giant and I just haven’t allowed myself to purchase a smaller one. Dorma (That’s what I named her) is perfect for omelets, whipped cream, yada yada… Keep an eye out on ArtisticEgg on Etsy for some I come across and sell.
Why I love Dorma (aka my 1950’s-ish mixer):
- It’s from a period when things were built to last.
- It came with two mixing bowls (more than my Kitchen Aid came with).
- It came with a juicer attachment (love my wooden handheld, but still…).
- It still works (like my husband 😉 Just sayin’…)
- It detaches from main frame allowing it to be used manually (quit it, I’m not going there. You…)
- I appreciate the antiquity of it and it fuels my Old Soul.
Cons of Dorma (we’re not all perfect):
- Little concerned with longterm effects of occasional rusting on beaters.
- Sometimes has a burning smell. But to be fair, I think it has dissipated with continued use.
- Makes me look like a KCH (Kitchen Counter Hoarder).
- Have to manually rotate bowls, but I’ve adjusted. Actually I’m using the handheld quite a bit. (Stop it..)
What to look for before you buy:
- An outlet to test it. Plug it in, plug it in. I came very close to buying one that didn’t work properly.
- Beaters are in good condition. These are kinda hard to come buy. (You have a smart phone, google or ebay the model number and see the parts you can purchase.)
- Did it scream at you when you walked by? If so, you might need it.
